Welcome to The HPSW

What We Do

HPSW is a grass-roots educational organization interested in the conservation, propagation, dissemination, and use of hardy herbaceous perennials in the landscape. Our goals are to build an educational garden to demonstrate and maintain unusual varieties and cultivars, to perform plant trials, and to build test plots for perennials, emphasizing the conservation of old and uncommon varieties.  We host meetings about specific plant types, garden design, and horticultural techniques. We assist in rescuing gardens and plants threatened by change in the urban and suburban areas of Puget Sound.

Next Meeting:

Suzanne Ferris: The Oku Stone (a slide lecture on narrative in the garden)

Monday January 18th, 6:30-9:00

NEW SITE: Douglass Classroom at Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 NE 41st St.  Seattle, WA 98105

Suzanne Ferris is pleased to share her photographic impressions of Paul Smith and Julie King's respective gardens. Both Paul and Julie share an interest in antipodeal (southern hemisphere) plants.  Both use many of the same plants but in different contexts.

Seed Exchange

We strongly promote the exchange of rare and unusual seeds.  Please see the Seed Exchange page for more information about the seeds we have available.

Garden Rescue

Over five brisk days in October, November, and December over 30 members returned to Marian Raitz's home to dig, divide, pot up, and save many of her treasures that she generously donated to our group for the Spring Plant Sale.  There were many special plants that can't be found at nurseries anymore.  We took over 15 truckloads to nearby holding sites generously donated by Kathy Norsworthy and Kandy Kroll.  We saved 1850 pots and over 80 species.  Thank you very much to all of the volunteers, even some potential new members!

See the pics on the Plant Sale page.
